Toro-bari and Yantan-akari Festival
Aug.19.2018
“Toro-bari” [lantern-decorating] is an event for warding off disease that has been held in the Yuyadani area (a Japan Heritage site) since the Edo period. Square lanterns are decorated with zodiac figures made of vegetables and accompanied with satirical poems reflecting contemporary social conditions, then offered to Chofuku-ji Temple. The “Yantan-akari Festival” is held at the same time: lights are added to the traditional “Toro-bari”, creating a magical summer night’s atmosphere. A perfect occasion to put on a yukata.
