Otaki [Big Waterfall] Festival

Sep.01.2018

The Otaki Daimyo-jin Shrine stands next to the largest waterfall in the town at the headwaters of the Tawara River. Fudo Myo-o [Acala], a deity who protects against water hazards, is enshrined here. At the festival, three eels, said to be envoys of Fudo-son [another name for Fudo Myo-o/Acala], are given sake to drink then released into the basin of the waterfall in a prayer for rain. An unusual ritual in the Japan Heritage site of Yuyadani.
