Birthplace of Nagatani Soen New Year’s offering of hand-rolled tea

Nagatani Soen invented the Japanese method for producing green tea in 1738. Hand-rolled tea produced on December 31st in special driers at the house where Nagatani Soen was born is offered to Chasomyo Shrine where Soen is enshrined before dawn on January 1. Visitors can watch this event, the earliest demonstration in the year involving hand-rolled tea, and visit Chasomyo Shrine as they contemplate Soen’s great achievement. The long lines of paper-shaded lamps create a magical atmosphere that is also a highlight of the visit.
